Orbeon Forms at a GlanceOrbeon Forms is an open source forms solution designed to handle complex forms typical of the enterprise or government. It includes:
With Orbeon Forms, you build user-friendly, interactive, and good-looking forms out of the box. All the details such as as-you-type validation, error summary and form submission are handled for you. There is no more struggling with programming languages or browser incompatibilities. On the client, Orbeon Forms only requires a standard web browser (including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Opera) thanks to XForms and Ajax technology. There is no need for additional client-side software or plugins. On the server, Orbeon Forms runs on any operating system by deploying to a standard Java Servlet container such as Tomcat. Orbeon Form BuilderOrbeon Form Builder is a visual form designer which allows you to build and deploy forms in minutes right from your web browser. Form Builder uses an easy to understand layout based on sections and grids, onto which you place your form elements. You concentrate on the data you want to capture, not the pesky details. Form Builder supports common datatypes and user interface controls, as well as attachments and pictures. It also lets you import your own XML Schema and use the imported types. The forms you build with Form Builder automatically produce nice-looking HTML and PDF output. With Form Builder, any form is easily designed in multiple languages, including labels, help, and error messages. For experts, Form Builder lets your form talk to the outside world with its built-in Web Services editor, and advanced form authors can provide their own XForms markup. Finally, with a single click, your form is deployed into Form Runner and users can start filling-out data. Orbeon Form RunnerOrbeon Form Runner is the Orbeon Forms runtime environment. Form Runner manages form types and form data, handles search, validation, and takes care of the plumbing necessary to capture, save, import and export form data. Easy PDF OutputOrbeon Forms supports producing PDF either automatically by following the layout of the HTML output, or by using PDF templates. In that case you can accurately match the layout of existing PDF or paper forms. Flexible Persistence LayerOut of the box, Orbeon Forms stores data in its embedded eXist XML database. But you can easily customize Orbeon Forms to your needs by hooking into Form Runner's REST-based perstistence API. Offline ModeOrbeon Forms supports offline data entry based on Google Gears. In this mode, filling-out web forms no longer requires an internet connection. A Truly Open Source SolutionOrbeon Forms is open source without compromise by using the business-friendly LGPL license. This allows you to use Orbeon Forms free of charge for your open source or commercial projects. Open StandardsOrbeon not only follows standards but leads them as an active member of the W3C Forms Working Group in charge of the XForms recommendation. Orbeon also participates in the XML Processing Working Group. W3C XFormsAt the core of Orbeon Forms lies an Ajax-based XForms engine, the product of years of development. XForms is the only open standard specifically designed to handle your complex forms, thanks to its wealth of form-centric features and its declarative architecture.
